Although I suffered from gout, Turmeric was not at the top of my list because there were other things that helped me better. But I do know a little bit about it since I used and researched it extensively when I was under constant gout attacks.
Is Turmeric Good for Gout Pain? Turmeric may be good for gout and gout pain due to its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. The magic ingredient in Turmeric is curcumin, which has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that make it a perfect addition to the gout sufferers' diet.
How Effective Is Turmeric For gout?
How effective it is could be dependent on the frequency, intensity, and duration of your gout attacks, it would also depend on what you were ingesting, such as the difference between Turmeric and Curcumin. Curcumin is the compound in Turmeric with incredible anti-inflammatory properties, but it only makes up 3% of Turmeric.
You would be wise to buy Curcumin supplements instead of eating copious amounts of Turmeric.
What did I mean when talking about the frequency, intensity, and duration of your gout attacks having an effect on how well it works for you? Well, you'd have to read my gout story to understand completely, but let me give you the short story.
Some people start off with the big toe, a slight problem in the elbow or knee. They have an attack, it lasts a week or so and disappears for 3, 6, or even 12 months. These are the people who will benefit from Turmeric.
When mine started, it also started in my toes but went away after mild attacks. Two years later, my knee was the size of a cantaloupe or small basketball when I awakened to what I thought was a knife embedded into my knee. I would have fluid drawn off today, and back doing it again 3 days later. It didn't work for me and others who experience or experienced severe attacks. But neither did most of the diets or meds.
But if your gout is infrequent, Turmeric can likely give you some relief, and it will not hurt you for using it even when you're not having a gout attack. A Curcumin supplement may be far superior.
Why Would A Curcumin Supplement Help With Gout Pain?
The science supporting Turmeric doesn't support it at all, it was tested with Curcumin at much higher doses than any normal human would attempt to gorge on. I doubt anyone would (could?) consume enough Turmeric daily to attain a matching amount as tested. Plus one of the tests/studies was an animal study.
A 2013 human study again reinforced the anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin. It was actually an extract used known as Flexofytol, a purified curcumin extract.
A 2018 study suggests that people with osteoarthritis who took curcumin extract for three months had reductions in joint pain. What most fail to take into account is that in the study, it was used in combination with boswellic acid.
The next problem with the 2018 study is that there was not one gout patient involved with the study. It's a stretch to make such claims and attribute it all to Turmeric.
Are turmeric and lemon juice good for gout?
I say bravo. Lemon juice is likely going to help some. Acidic foods such as apple cider vinegar tend to lower your insulin levels. This is a good thing if you have gout. Studies have shown that type II diabetes and gout are linked. That means you are likely pre-diabetic or are a type II diabetic.
In fact, a study done back in 2014 suggested that gout may cause type II diabetes. WebMD gives a little insight in this article.
I think insulin resistance causes both. I mean come on, it's a logical conclusion considering the body processes that happen with insulin resistance. It floods your system with ATP, which produces purines, which turns to uric acid.
It's the only thing known to skyrocket the amount of uric acid, and purines. No single food has ever done that and it's been tested.
Do Honey And Turmeric Help With Gout?
Honey spikes your insulin. It's likely only going to make things worse.
The Insulin Resistance Connection
I would advise watching this video post on a correct gout diet that will work instead of the garbage promoted by the big boys. The video was done by my doctor. Pay close attention to what he is leaning towards and why.
